Obituary for Anne Hurtt

Annie (Anne) Lawrie Demorest Hurtt of Tenants Harbor, Maine passed away on January 30, 2020 surrounded by her family. She was 94. Born in Rye, NY she spent her last years in Ann Arbor, MI. Anne was a graduate of Westover School, Wellesley College, and earned a master’s degree in psychology from Temple University.

Her long teaching career took her to England, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, where she passed on her endless love of learning and was known for encouraging her students’ curiosity
and creativity. Thoughtful and reflective, she brought an inquiring mind to all she engaged in, from local and national politics to Russian language and culture.

A lover of music and art, Anne sang in numerous choral groups until the age of 90, and returned to drawing and painting in her final years. She was an adventurous outdoorswoman and especially loved skiing, hiking, sailing, walking and tennis. She also loved birds and trees, and cared deeply about preserving the natural world.

A kind and steady soul, she never sought the limelight, accepting and supporting those around her. She possessed a wry sense of humor and was not afraid to speak out on issues that were important to her.

Anne was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Spencer M. Hurtt, her sister, Dilys D. Peirce, and her brother, William J. Demorest. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Demorest; her three daughters, Lawrie Hartt (Jacqueline Coren), Deborah Hurtt, and Sue Johnson (Kevin); two grandchildren, Andy and Dana Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be held in Eva’s House at Glacier Hills Senior Living Community, 1200 Earhart Road, Ann Arbor, MI on February 16th at 4pm, and in July in Tenants Harbor, ME.
