Obituary for Arlene R. Schmid
Arlene passed away on November 2, 2019 at the age of 92. She was born on May 9, 1927 in Ann Arbor, MI to Oscar E. and Louise A. (Seyfried) Reiff.
Arlene married Bernard Schmid on January 10, 1948 at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in Ann Arbor, MI. She was a lifelong member of the church and taught Sunday school for many years, as well as being a member of the Mother’s Study Circle, Church Women United – Ann Arbor and the State of Michigan unit, and served on the Women’s Board and Christian Education Board. For 45 years she served the Ecumenical Campus Center in Ann Arbor where she interfaced with foreign students.
Arlene gave much of her time to helping others. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years, developing an extensive hiking program. She delivered for Meals on Wheels as well as volunteering at the University Hospital gift shop, Brecon Village and the Washtenaw County Historical Society. An avid reader who especially wanted to help children, Arlene participated with Teaching-Learning Communities by working one-on-one with first-graders to help them learn to read. Compassionate to all, each month she would take a birthday cake to the Maxey Boys Training School so that all boys with a birthday that month could celebrate.
Arlene was the loving mother of Mary (James) Robertson, Barbara Schmid (Charles Todd), and William; proud grandmother of six; great-grandmother of nine; and dear sister-in-law of Nancy Trotter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard L., her son, Robert L., and her brother, Paul Reiff.
A memorial service in honor of Arlene’s life will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the Community Room of the EHM Professional Office Building (formerly Saline Community Hospital); 400 W. Russell St., Saline, MI 48176 (Go to second portico - Main Entrance).
