Obituary for Mrs. Auguste I. Cooper

Auguste Ingrid Cooper (née Schneider) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, age 85, died peacefully in her sleep on January 7, 2022, at Glacier Hills Senior Living Community. She was born December 25, 1936, in Schweinfurt, Germany, the daughter of Robert Georg and Anna Susanna (Schamberger) Schneider.

Auguste went by the nickname Gusti and grew up in Schweinfurt, Germany. She graduated from the Berufschule in Schweinfurt and worked at SKF. She met her husband, William A. Cooper Jr., in 1955 while he was serving in the United States Army and stationed at the Ledward Barracks in Schweinfurt. They were engaged in October 1956 before Bill returned to the US; Gusti joined him in Detroit in the spring of 1957. They were married in Detroit on October 5, 1957, and recently celebrated their 64th anniversary.

Gusti went on to earn a BA and MA, both with honors, in Germanic Languages from Central State College in Oklahoma and Purdue University, all while raising three children. She had a career as a librarian at the Purdue University Liberal Arts Library and the University of South Carolina Law Library before retiring in 1998.

Gusti was an avid reader of both German and English language literature. She also studied Spanish, French, and Russian. She was an amazing gardener whose flower beds were a sight to behold. She and Bill enjoyed traveling domestically and internationally and were also sailors for many years.

Gusti was preceded in death by siblings, Erika (Schneider) Oestereicher, Lydia (Schneider) Baker, and Erich Schneider.

She is survived by her husband, William; her daughter, Ingrid Louise (Christopher) Justice; grandchildren, Jacob (Talya), Samuel and Emma Justice; her sons, Robert William Cooper and James Allen Cooper (fiancée Belinda Williams); and her grandsons, Phillip and Henning Cooper, as well as their mother, Bettina.
