Barbara J DeLaTorre, 11/05/1933 – 04/10/2021, Ypsilanti, Michigan
Barbara DeLaTorre, 87, passed away Saturday, April 10, at home in the loving care of her family after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s disease.
She was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on November 5, 1933, the first daughter and second child of Kenneth A. and Jenny A. (Freeland) Elliott. She was a 1952 graduate of Ypsilanti Roosevelt High School. Barbara was introduced to her future husband, Edward DeLaTorre of Dexter, by her aunt and uncle and they married in May 1955. They enjoyed travel, and with their best friends took many trips throughout the states and Canada. They also enjoyed dancing and were a joy to watch as they moved gracefully and elegantly across the floor. Barbara was an avid card player (canasta, tunk, and euchre were her games) and enjoyed weekly card parties for many years. She was a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, a charitable organization. She was a loving and devoted grandmother, sharing her enjoyment of travel with her grandsons through annual trips to amusement and theme parks. She loved rollercoasters! Barbara had a lifelong love for animals, and cherished her childhood dogs and her cat, Roxie.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, parents, brothers, Richard (Virginia) and Edward (Joy); sisters, Cheryl Elliott (Jim Willard) and Suzanne Clark (Wayne); mother-in-law, Mercedes; brother-in-law, Frank DeLaTorre (Barbara); and sister-in-law, Dolores DeLaTorre.
She leaves behind four children – Diane, Mary (David) LaCoss, Michael and Tom (Brenda); grandsons, Erik (Amanda Ross) and Joel (Brandy) LaCoss; great-granddaughters, Vivian, Evelyn and Adaline LaCoss; sisters-in-law, Virginia Elliott and Barbara DeLaTorre-White; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A private funeral service will occur Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at 11 am at Nie Family Funeral Home on Carpenter Rd., Ypsilanti. Due to the pandemic, the service will be limited to family and close friends.
