Obituary for Barbara Ann Jackson (Fields)

Barbara Ann (Fields) Jackson left us to be with the Lord on March 25, 2020 after a brief illness at the age of 74.

She was born on September 30, 1945 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Charles “Giggs” and Birdie Mae “Betty Sue” Fields. She was a lifelong resident of Ann Arbor and attended Mack Elementary, Slauson Middle School, and graduated from Pioneer High School in 1963.

Shortly after graduation she began working for Michigan Bell, currently known as AT&T, in Ann Arbor and eventually retired after 30 years. During retirement, she became a fulltime caregiver for her mother.

Barbara was a devoted member of Bethel AME Church of Ann Arbor and has been a member of numerous organizations and choirs throughout her life. She enjoyed joining different Bible study groups, reading scripture, and praying for people. Most recently, she joined a tech class at church which she found to be enjoyable. She was a member of the Bethel AME Benevolent Ministries where she enjoyed sending out cards to seniors and shut-ins. Most recently, the Lord had laid on her heart to connect with people for Valentine’s Day and she took great pride in connecting with others in this way. She loved being a member of Bethel and adored her entire church family.

She loved her family and it was obvious to all that knew her that they were the most important part of her life. She was deeply proud to be a part of the Fields family and carry on their legacy.

Barbara was a huge University of Michigan football fan (Go Blue!) and don’t even bother her when Days of Our Lives was on.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles Kenneth Fields.

She leaves behind her loving son, Charles Kevin Jackson of Ann Arbor; her granddaughter, Charlena A. Jackson of Ann Arbor; and her special friends: Deacon Verna Arrington, Rev. Thomas Kirkland, the Johnson family (Mary, Andrea, Naomi, and Tanya), the entire Fields family (especially Jeanniestine Fields, Georgia Fields, and Jeni Johnson), the Bethel AME of Ann Arbor family, and all of her sons dearest and closet friends as she was everyone’s “mama.” She will also be missed by many family, friends, and godchildren who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 5, 2020 at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor, from 3-6 pm. A private burial will take place at United Memorial Garden Cemetery of Plymouth.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
