Obituary

Tribute to Mummy Okeke

Afulenu Bernice Okeke Nee Ejindu was born to the Christian family of Moses and Bernice Ejindu of Adazi Enu in Aniocha Local Government Area in Anambra State, Nigeria on May 16th 1940. She was the lone daughter of the parents which carried a significant amount of responsibility in our culture and which she lived up to.

Her parents provided her the best education at her time, a tribute she transferred to all her children. Bernice was a pioneer student of the first Government Girls School Enugu in Nigeria - Queens School, where she had several leadership roles and still managed to follow her passion for dancing as a dance instructor. She had a passion for teaching and education and proceeded on a career as a Certified Educator at St. Marks Teachers Training College Nibo/Nise in Anambra state, Nigeria. One of the hallmarks of her teaching career was the founding of the Community School in Amawbia, in Anambra State, where she raised the educational standard to enviable levels. Bernice retired from there as a Special Grade Headmistress with great commendation.

She was married to the love of her life Mr. Raphael E C Okeke on August 15th 1964 who has been steadily by her side for the past fifty six years. They are blessed with three sons and two daughters. She has been the bedrock of the family and a mother figure to very many people beyond her children. She came to United States to be close to her Children and became a United States Citizen in 2005.

Mummy Okeke as we fondly call her is a “Survivor” and by God's Grace had endured multiple medical challenges. She passed on to Glory to rest with the Lord on September 19th 2020 at about 12:12pm. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

She is survived by her husband, Mr. Raphael E C Okeke, sons; Alfred Ejike Okeke, Henry Chigbo Okeke, and Raphael Chukwubuike Okeke, daughters; Ijeoma Stella Chukwu and Adaeze Angela Okeke, daughters in law; Ada Okeke, Ibukun Okeke and Nneoma Okeke, son in law, Nnamdi Chukwu and many grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings and cousins.

Adieu Mama. May the Lord be with you till we meet again to part no more.

My mothers' confidant! The one person who could make my mum change her mind on anything! Oh Aunty, now you're gone too!
My special aunty who was so young in thought and conversation. She didn't talk "old". Growing up in childish mind then, she was so comforting to talk to and so understanding about teen issues. Now as a parent, she was still my go to person on how to deal with life.
I will miss you Aunty.
