Obituary for Betty June Jones
Betty June Jones, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sept. 28 surrounded by her family. She was born August 21, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Earmel and Alma Kron. She grew up in a very loving family, surrounded by Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles. Cousins and friends. Her Dad and Grandpa were railroaders on the Pennsylvania Railroad and her Mother worked Cincinnati Milling Machine Company.
Betty met Hebert Jones while she was working on her MA in Teaching at Ball State University and they were married on Dec. 20, 1953. With summers off from teaching they enjoyed many summer trips traveling throughout the US and Europe with their daughters, Deborah and Kathleen. Hebert preceded Betty in death passing away in April 2014. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary shortly before his death.
Betty loved her family with her whole heart, enjoyed traveling, reading, films, music and helping others. A beloved teacher, Betty taught in Indiana followed by 26 years at Lincoln High School where she taught French and Spanish. After retirement, she went on to volunteer teaching Spanish and work at a local thrift shop that helped those in need.
Betty was very involved with her daughters and grandchildren’s lives, attending sporting events and taking family trips to CA to see her youngest grandchildren. Going to see the Detroit Tigers was a special love the family all shared.
Betty’s life was a living example of unconditional love. She took to heart the wise words of her Dad, “Don’t judge others” and “don’t say anything at all, if you can’t say something nice.” Betty was also very influenced by her Mother, Alma, whose kind and loving sprit showed through in all of the giving things she would do. Betty developed her own personal mantra: We are here to learn to love and to forgive. The rest really doesn’t matter.
One of her favorite passages from St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord Make me an instrument of Your Peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon,
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light
And where there is sadness, joy.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born into eternal light.
Betty is survived by her daughters Deborah Hoffman and Kathleen McCallum, her Grandchildren, Stephanie Hoffman, Greg Hoffman, Christy Hoffman, Katie Hoffman, Ganesh Pariyar, Paul McCallum and Sarah McCallum. She loved and cared for her family deeply.
A celebration to honor Betty’s loving life will take place in 2021. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Carl Rinne Lewy Body Dementia Initiative through the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center. Donations can also be made to Scholarship Foundation in her name at Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, MI.
