Obituary for Carolyn Lewis-Stone

It is with great sorrow to announce that Carolyn Jean Lewis-Stone of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on November 6, 2020 at the age of 72.

Carolyn was born May 2, 1948 in Lexington, Kentucky to the late George A. Stone and Nannie M. Lewis, whom she loved dearly. She was an only child.

Upon earning her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, with a minor of English literature, from Kentucky State University in 1970, Carolyn moved on to Ann Arbor where she obtained her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 1974.

She began her career as a clinical social worker at the Kentucky State Department of Child Welfare, Monroe County Community Mental Health Center, and the Mental Health Clinic at the University of Michigan Student Health Services.

Carolyn remained in Ann Arbor throughout the rest of her life where she worked for the University of Michigan as a mental health clinician at Counseling and Psychological Services and the Center for the Continuing Education for Women. Continuing her commitment to the service of others after departing from the University of Michigan in 1990, Carolyn began her thriving private practice which she maintained until her untimely death.

Carolyn’s life was full of adventure, creativity, learning and excitement. She was a voracious reader of diverse subjects and a daily consumer of political news, daily devotions, newspaper comics, and psychological literature. A talented and creative soul, Carolyn expressed herself through skilled writing penning several manuscripts for publication, theatrical productions in which she acted, sang, and played piano; knitting and sewing, baking, golfing and ballroom dancing--just to name a few. She honed and showcased many of her talents in various social, recreational, and professional groups, including the Ann Arbor Civic Theater, Ballroom Chicks, a professional writing group and Huron Valley Women's Golf Club.

Carolyn’s joy of life had its place, but did not supersede her love for God. She converted to Catholicism as a young adult and attended St. Francis Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Kindness, grace, and integrity marked her way of life, personally and professionally.

Besides God, Carolyn’s greatest love was that of being a psychotherapist, employing her innate wisdom, intuition, wit, candor, and compassion to foster the healing and growth of many. She is credited with empowering and educating to help change and shape the lives of a plethora of people for over 50 years.

Beloved by many--those who preceded her in death and those who remain of the living--Carolyn will be greatly missed. Her contributions of knowledge and talent will be remembered always. May the memory of Carolyn Jean Lewis-Stone remain in the hearts of whom she touched.
