Obituary for Catherine Dixon Baker

Catherine Dixon Baker, 80 of Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at St. Joseph Hospital.

Born in Brownsville, Tennessee she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie Dixon. She was a graduate of Ann Arbor High School class of 1957. Education has always been a vital part of Catherine’s world which lead her to obtain her Associate, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees after the age of 50. Catherine held a variety of jobs which included working as a paraprofessional, restaurant owner, and finally a nutritionist for Michigan State University.

Throughout the years Catherine opened her heart and home to a host of children and families who instantly became a part of her ever growing family and circle of friends. Catherine loved spending time with her family, friends, and anyone who was drawn in by her infectious personality and love of butterflies. She was a devoted mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

Catherine is survived by her children, Sherri (Darrin) Newlin, Tim (Veronica Beckman) Baker; sisters, Jean Winborn, Theresa (Scott) Campbell, and Paula Miller; grandchildren, Tiara Newlin, Lynnea (EJ) Wilson, DJ Newlin, and Donovan Baker; and her great-grandchildren, Eleyah Wilson and Tucker Newlin and special friend Kenny Person.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Baker, and her brothers, James and Steve Dixon.

A viewing will take place on Thursday, December 26, 2019 from 6-8 pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. Funeral service will take place on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor, 432 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor. Burial will follow in United Memorial Gardens.
