Obituary for Christopher Brian Birk

Chris died peacefully in his sleep at home at the age of 64 after a 17-month battle with brain cancer. A native of Ypsilanti, Chris earned degrees from the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University before starting his 37-year career as a State Farm insurance agent in Ann Arbor. With a sharp mind for sales and business, he served his clients well. Outside of work, he invested his time in the lives of his children and his local church community. In his spare time, he loved playing golf, tending his yard, and watching sports.

He was preceded in death by his mother Nancy (Davis) Birk (2014). He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Deena (Lewis); his 6 children, Jeremy, Jessica (John) Cropsey, Amy (Jeff) Brink, Joshua (Andrea), Elissa (Josiah) Hoffman, Abigail (Samuel) Apple; his 14 grandchildren, Elise, Ethan, Micah, Caleb, Christopher, Samuel, Genevieve, Jonah, Benjamin, Liliana, Adelyn, Thomas, Elijah, Judah; his father, Robert Birk; and his siblings Timothy (Sandi), Brett (Tonya), Roxanne (Jeff) Boczar, and Sarah (Craig) Lorenz. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb 7 at Nie Funeral Home (Liberty Rd) from 2-4PM and 6-8PM. A memorial service followed by a luncheon will be held on Saturday, Feb 8 at Knox Presbyterian Church, Ann Arbor at 11AM. A private burial will take place at Highland Cemetery (family only). In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Kibuye Feeding Program (Serge Global) or Family Life Services of Washtenaw County.

Chris was a man of faith whose life was marked by love of family, service, integrity, generosity, humor, and hospitality. He was a member of the Word of Life Community (Ann Arbor) where he served as a leader for many years. He was also a member of Knox Presbyterian Church (Ann Arbor) and served 5 years on the board of Serge Global that supports works of mercy and ministry around the globe. He was loved and respected by many and will be deeply missed.

Dear Deena and family,
I am deeply saddened by Chris's passing. I first met Chris through a business relationship ~25 years ago; a business relationship that quickly evolved to a personal friendship. I always enjoyed sharing time together with Chris and greatly admired what a truly good man he was: kind, generous, highly intelligent, a great family man with a strong spiritual life. As I type these words it's hard to accept that I will never again be able to share time together with my friend. I take solace in the knowledge that my life was made infinitely richer for having known Chris and I will always cherish his gift of friendship. May the Lord's love and compassion embrace and console you during your time of grief and sorrow.

So sorry for the loss of your whole family. My prayers are with everyone who will be missing this faithful example of Christian service and commitment. The recent Toby Mac song about his son reminds me of your experience- “God has you in Heaven, but I have you in my heart,” says the chorus.

You were a great man Chris. I alway had so much respect for you and the way you lead your family and loved God. One fond memory I have of you is joining your family for a meal one evening. I remember there being so much love around the table and I also remember you read some scripture and then had a family "Lord's Supper" together. It really made a big impression on me at the time. You will be missed dearly.

There's great sadness in the loss of Chris, but also great hope for his eternal joy in Heaven as he was the Lord's faithful servant. From my youth and into adulthood I clearly saw the awesome desire Chris had for his children, and other youth to know, love, and serve Jesus with fervor and unwavering hearts. His convictions were demonstrated in his generosity, commitment, and friendship to many of us over many seasons. In particular, the offering of his time and wisdom to me during an important year while living in Ann Arbor greatly encouraged and motivated me to take on and begin the mission of being a husband, father, and provider for my future family. His own example spoke more profoundly than his timely words. I'm grateful for Chris' legacy as a Christian father, and missionary disciple. Well done, good and faithful servant!

Chris was the only insurance carrier I've had for over 35 years, and during this time I have learned so much from him. His generosity, his humor, love for his family and devotion to God. I will miss you and our world has lost another angel, but gained one in heaven. Prayers to Deena and all the family members during this transition. May the void be filled with his love and wonderful memories of the days he made you smile.
