Obituary for Dolores Hertler Church

Dolores Hertler Church, age 89, of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020.

Dolores was born on October 27, 1930 to parents Harold and Viola (Schroen) Hertler in Saline, Michigan and was the third of seven children. As a young child, Dolores was often asked to help other students with reading and writing which helped her realize that she was destined to be a teacher. She struggled to pay for college but remained dedicated to reaching her goal in becoming a teacher so she took up several jobs which included working on a farm, drugstore clerk, waitress, mapmaker’s assistant, and bookkeeper. She completed her bachelors from Eastern Michigan University in 1953 and later earned a master’s degree from EMU in 1958. Dolores began a long teaching career- she spent 33 years teaching second and third grade in Ann Arbor and surrounding areas until her retirement in 1986.

Dolores met Albert C. Church at the EMU library and the two married in 1954 at First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti. Albert also dedicated his life to teaching. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1963 and his masters in 1967. He taught industrial arts in the Brighton, Willow Run, Ypsilanti, and Ann Arbor public schools until his passing in 1983.

She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed making her own clothing as well as aprons for Albert’s industrial arts class. Dolores also enjoyed expressing her creativity though drawing and writing.

Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Carl Church; her parents, Harold and Viola Hertler; her siblings: Richard, Calvin, Delmar (Bonnie), and Doris Hertler; and her in-laws, Milan and Luella Church.

She leaves behind her sisters, Mary (Francis) Tirb of Miami, Flordia and Katherine (Donald) Brown of Brimley, Michigan; three nephews, Andrew Hertler, Gregory and John Tirb; her niece, Teresa Bross; and her special neighbor, Helen Richards, who was like family.

Her family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful care the Visiting Angels and St. Joseph’s Hospice has provided over the years.

Private cremation services have taken place.

Memorial continuations can be made in Dolores’s name to the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
