Obituary for Donald John LeClair

Donald J. LeClair, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, age 87, passed away September 24, 2019. He was born on October 5, 1931 in Dannemora, New York, the son of Paul LeClair and Florence (McGrath) LeClair. Donald enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 9, 1949. He served in the Korean War as S/Sargent and received an Honorable Discharge on October 1952 as Field First Sargent. He graduated from Cleary College and for thirty-two years was an accountant at Ford Motor Company. He married Betty (Frey) LeClair on October 9, 1954.

He served two terms (1968-1976) as trustee on Pittsfield Township Board, and for more than 40 years was appointed to numerous township committees and commissions. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 8989 and the American Legion Post 46. He served as an usher at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for thirty years.

He and his beloved wife Betty were Charter Members of the Pittsfield Township Historical Society. For almost ten years, he advocated for and oversaw the restoration of the barn and house at Pittsfield Township’s historical Sutherland-Wilson Farm Museum. Because of his hard work and dedication to restoring these structures, the barn was dedicated “The LeClair Barn” in 2015.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling. The most memorable trip was the Mediterranean Cruise with his family at which time he and Betty celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. He enjoyed wood working, making rocking horses, end tables, Adirondack chairs and bird houses for the Historical Society’s fundraisers. He was a proud owner of a 1916 Ford Model T.

In addition of his wife of 65 years, Don is survived by three daughters Michelle (John) Bemis of Norcross, GA, Mariann (Brian) Scherdt of Ann Arbor and Andrea (Christopher) Sharp of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Michael Bemis, Brian Lewis, Randy Scherdt, Joshua, Caitlin Sharp and two great-grandchildren McKayla & Tristin.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2250 E. Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor. Burial will be held at Arborcrest Memorial Park, 2521 Glazier Way. A luncheon will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pittsfield Township Historical Society, P.O. Box 6013, Ann Arbor, 48106 or Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, 48103.
