Obituary for Donatus A.C. Onimo

Donatus Achuwanike Chijoke Onimo was born to Chief Wilfred Nnadozie and Dorothy A. Onimo, June 7, 1949 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria and was raised in Orlu, Imo State, Nigeria.

Don voyaged to the United States in 1979 in pursuit of higher education. He paved the way for several family members to come to the United States to pursue higher education and career opportunities as well.

He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts before transferring to the University of Michigan to obtain a degree in Naval Architectural Marine Engineering. He worked in his field of engineering at the Montgomery Shipyard in the Iberian Ports of New Iberia, Louisiana. He later returned to Michigan where he met his beautiful wife, Alfreda. This year marked 34 years of marriage for them.

He loved learning and taking advantage of opportunities that came his way. He studied and received a certification in Assessment and Equalization. This training landed him a career with Wayne County in Detroit, Michigan. He worked for the county before retiring and then re-entered the workforce under a contract with London Township before retiring again.

Don had a relentless spirit and defied many odds. He was kind and willing to go out of his way for others. His ambition and determination were contagious and inspired his children to pursue their dreams with faith, hope, and resilience. He was an active member of his church, The Carpenter's House. He enjoyed spending his free time studying scripture, taking walks with his wife, going on long road trips with his wife, and volunteering at his church's community garden.

We are deeply saddened by this loss but rejoice in knowing that he is a Christian and loved God. We are truly grateful for the time we had together and will forever cherish many wonderful memories.

He is survived by his wife, Alfreda Onimo of Pittsfield Township, MI; four children, Wilfred Onimo of Brooklyn NY, Lydia (Jonathan) Schroeder of Nassau, Bahamas, Chinyere Onimo of Pittsfield Township, MI, and Ndubisi Onimo of Pittsfield Township, MI; his grandchildren, Amara, Gavin, and "Baby 3" Schroeder; his siblings, Mr. Philip Onimo (Philo), Mrs. Christiana Uwandu Nee Onimo, Mrs. Julie Chinyere Onyejiaku Nee Onimo, Mrs. Justina Ogbuagu Nee Onimo (Ikechikwu), Mrs. Fidelia Igwegbe Nee Onimo (Joel), Dr. Remy Onimo (Ifeyinwa); along with many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws and a host of friends and church family. We especially acknowledge his nephews, Mr. Bede Uwandu and Mr. Kelechi Uzowuru, and his niece, Mrs. Chibuchi M. Ezeikpe.

While the visitation will be public for both family and friends to rotate through on Saturday, August 8, 2020 from 10am to 12pm, the funeral service will be private, for the immediate family only, at the Ann Arbor Regent Hotel & Suites, 2455 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48108, in the detached brick building to the right of the hotel.

Please remember to wear a face mask per the hotel's policy.
