Obituary for Doreen T. (Chakeres) Tziahanas

Doreen Theodora Tziahanas, age 82, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2020.

She was born on July 25, 1938 to parents George and Mary Chakeres and raised alongside her sister, Jeanie (Anastasia) in Columbus, Ohio. Shortly after graduating from high school, Doreen met Tom Tziahanas while attending a mutual friend's wedding. The two married and spent 62 incredible years dedicated to one another until his passing just three short months ago on August 8, 2020.

Tom and Doreen settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan where they would create a family and happily raise their four children, Becky, Mary Jane, George, and Peter. Prior to raising children, Doreen worked at Great Lakes Bank in the mortgage department as a secretary and later, when her children were older, resumed the role of secretary within the Ann Arbor public school system.

Doreen was not only a doting wife and mother, she was also an accomplished singer. She participated in recording classical and opera performances and was deeply involved in the church choir for many years. She and her husband, Tom shared a deep and loving connection to their Greek Orthodox faith and enjoyed many years of membership at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Ann Arbor. However, her greatest joy always came from the time she spent time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren- her greatest achievements.

Doreen is survived by her four children, Becky Wyman, Mary Jane (Phil) Hourani, George (Julie) Tziahanas, and Peter (Anita) Tziahanas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Benjamin, Miya, and Nick Hourani, Aron Wyman, Thomas Tziahanas, Alivia Wells, Brittni Koelsch, and Aysu Tziahanas; and her great-grandchildren, Alexander, Aliyah, Kody, Karter, and Zoey.

She was predeceased by her husband, Tom G. Tzahanas; her parents, George and Mary Chakeres, her beloved Uncle’s Pete, and her sister, Jeanie (Anastasia).

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 3109 Scio Church Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48103, at 10:30 am. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery of Ann Arbor. Please remember to wear a mask and practice social distancing while attending funeral services.
