Obituary for Ethel Lee (Young) Smith

Cherished mother, Ethel Lee Smith, was called home to the Lord on May 15, 2021.

She was born on March 14, 1930 in Snow Hill, Alabama, the 7th daughter of Sheffield and Rosa (Wiley) Young. She was known to the family as “El Lee.”

She moved to Michigan at the age 12 with her sister, Arutha Bradley. She loved her family and never stopped talking about her nine siblings and their children til the last day: Beatrice, Arutha, Ruby, Viola, Cleonese, Marzell, Sheffield Jr., Alonzo, and Ruth. She met and married Richard Smith Sr., who preceded her in death in 2010. Their union was blessed with 5 children: Annie Ruth Smith (deceased 2017), Anita Smith, Debra Jean Cooper (Gary Sr.), Richard Smith Jr. (Bernice), and Nancy Kay Smith.

Her favorite place was church and she loved her church family at Second Baptist Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan. SHe loved garage sales, shopping, and visiting relatives. She retired from nursing related work at Hillside Terrace and had prior worked for the University of Michigan Hospital. Those who knew who have been truly blessed by having her in their lives. Her disposition was unique, she always saw the positive side in others and never complained.

In addition to her cherished children, she is survived by 6 grandchildren, Ericka Pitters (Caleb), Marswella Reed, Wendy Ferrell (Andre), Richard Smith III, Jaiar, Gary Cooper Jr., Cindy Smith (deceased 2016), 15 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
