Obituary for George Smith Cowan
George Smith Cowan, Ph.D. passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022 in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
More than anything, George loved laughing and spending time with his family. George was an avid reader, especially technical books, science fiction, and romance novels. He loved sharing books aloud with his wife nightly. When not with his family or reading, George had a long career in computer science, and in retirement spent his time teaching computer science at Eastern Michigan University or playing tennis and pickleball with friends. We will all miss his presence and infectious giggle.
Born March 18, 1945 in Warner Robins, Georgia to Mary Esther (Scarborough) Cowan and the late George S. Cowan, Sr.
George will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary Hogan; mother, Esther Cowan; sisters, Mary (Cowan) McElroy and Paul McElroy, Catherine McElroy, Anna (McElroy) and Christopher Bollinger; son, Jeremy Cowan and Begona (Marnotes) Cowan, grandchild, David Cowan; daughter, Malaika Cowan; son, Brian Phelps and Allison (Juhas) Phelps, grandchildren, Zachary Phelps and Kyle Phelps.
He was preceded in death by his late daughter, Christine Phelps.
Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. Friends and family are welcome to join the family in a Celebration of Life at 2:30 pm.
