Obituary

Helen C. Birdsall, 89, a longtime resident of Ypsilanti, Michigan passed away on November 2, 2019 at the Brecon Village Memory Support Center in Saline, Michigan. She was the first of 5 daughters, born on March 3, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to Nathaniel and Beatrice Wilson. Helen spent her growing years with her grandparents in Gladstone, Michigan graduating valedictorian of her class in 1948, and earning a full scholarship to the University of Michigan. There, she met her future husband, Theodore (Ted) Birdsall. They were married on June 23, 1951 and were married for 62 years until Ted passed away on November 25, 2013.

Helen earned her Bachelor’s degree while she raised six children. She was very active in her home parish, St. John the Baptist, in Ypsilanti, including singing in the choir and substitute teaching at the school. Helen pursued her interests in painting, gardening and quilting, through faculty women’s club groups and the Ann Arbor Art Association. Throughout her life she volunteered in numerous areas, such as Beyer Hospital Auxiliary, Visiting Nurses, and Church Women United. She also was a cub scout/girl scout leader and a “nature lady.”

Loving mother of Ed, Mike (Sue), Peg (Jim) Kovas, Steve (Lora), Pat (Elspeth), and Bob (Sandy); proud grandmother of ten; great-grandmother of a growing set; and dear sister of Pat (Charlie) Fisher, Jinny (Robbie) Robinson, and Alexa (Greg) Hodgins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; and her sister, Mary (Norm) McIntosh.

A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 11am until the time of the memorial service at 12pm at Nie Family Funeral Home (3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103).

The family would like to give a special note of thanks to the Memory Care Center at Brecon Village for the years of thoughtful and caring service they provided.

Memorial contributions in Helen’s honor may be made to the Matthaei Botanical Gardens (1800 N. Dixboro Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48105) or online here https://leadersandbest.umich.edu/find/#!/env/mbgna/tribute.
