Obituary for Helen L. Snedeker
Helen L. Snedeker peacefully passed into the arms of her Savior in full confidence of the resurrection at their home in Dixboro on August 8, 2020. Forever carrying her loving devotion in their hearts are her husband of 67 years, John “Jack” G.; her children, Steven, Karen (Gregory) Bone, Robin (James) Zynda, Kathryn (Haldon Ferris), and Merri Lee (Charles) Day; her grandchildren, Melissa (Greg) Goings, Sarah Bone, Ryan Bone, Joseph (Kathy) Zynda, Aaron Zynda, Micayla Zynda, and John “Jack” Day; her great-grandchildren, Ashley, Hailey, and Miranda; her sisters, Jane Anne Tharp and Sue (Richard) Trimble; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sally VanderPloeg; her grandson, Matthew John Crane, and her niece, Dianna Tharp.
Helen was born in Charlotte, Michigan, to Harold and Lucile Smith on September 6, 1934, the second of four daughters. She was involved in many organizations from an early age, including the drum majorette for her high school band, excelled playing cymbals and drums, Job’s Daughters, and Methodist Youth Fellowship at church. She met John Snedeker, fresh out of the Air Force, at Cleary Business School. They were married one week after her 19th birthday on September 13, 1953.
Always a devoted Methodist, the church was the center of her life. The mission work of the United Methodist Women was of great importance to Helen. Helen provided essential services for the Memorial and Worship Committees, Altar Guild, and many other church groups. An excellent typist, Helen also did secretarial work for her church and the local school. Her life was one of service and sacrifice for her family, church, and community.
She was a fierce protector and advocate of her five children in all their endeavors.
She also adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with deep love, attending their activities with enthusiasm. She was the caregiver for numerous children within the community, as well as three of her grandchildren.
Helen was a loyal fan of the Wolverines, Tigers, and Red Wings, even in their most dismal seasons. She loved to bake, and her potato salad was beyond compare. She was a blessing to all of us, and it is difficult to imagine life without her. This amazingly strong woman will be eternally missed.
A memorial service celebrating Helen’s life will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. on the Village Green of the Dixboro United Methodist Church; 5221 Church Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48105. The family will welcome and receive guests before the service at 1:00 p.m on the Village Green. Rev. Jeanne Garza will officiate.
Social distancing will be practiced, and face masks are required. Due to COVID and to protect your health, please bring your chairs, if possible.
