Jim leaves behind his loving wife Betsy, two children, Katherine and Jonathan (Danielle), and two sisters, Melodie Gatz and Linda (Chuck) Bowker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Violet and Henry, as well as his brother Jerry.

Jim attended St. John's Lutheran School from 1961 to 1970, where he participated in sports and academics and was named most valuable basketball player and co-valedictorian of his graduating class. He attended Laporte High School from 1970 to 1974 where he was in the National Honor Society and served as co-editor of the high school yearbook. He attended Purdue University from 1974 to 1975, where he was on the Dean's List, then transferred to Pratt Institute in New York City to attend architecture school. Jim became a registered architect in 1983 and worked for ten years on a wide variety of building and design projects on the East coast.

In New York he met his wife, Betsy. They were married in 1988 and their daughter Katherine was born in Greenwich Village. The family moved to Ann Arbor, where their son Jonathan was born in 1990. Jim worked at Hobbs+Black for 24 years, rising to the position of Senior Vice President. He was a Cub Scout leader and coached youth sports. He served on the Ann Arbor Historic District Commission and was a member of the Vestry at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.

Later in his career, Jim worked on a variety of large projects including the Central Hospital of the University of Montreal, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and the Ford Motor Company research and development facility for electric vehicles ("The Hub") in Dearborn, MI. In addition to his interests in gardening and horticulture, Jim believed strongly in teamwork, developing young people's potential, and mentoring upcoming professionals.
