Obituary for Dr. James W. Teener

Dr. James “Jim” Wallace Teener passed away from complications after a heart attack on November 28, 2022 at the age of 59, surrounded by his family.

Jim loved his family deeply and took care of us in so many ways. He took great joy in expressing his love through cooking gourmet meals and sharing plentiful wine, never passing up an opportunity to celebrate with his family. He was the epitome of an outdoorsman, taking us sailing, fishing, camping, kayaking, hiking in the National Parks, cross-country skiing, birdwatching, and playing pickle-ball at the lake.

Jim was a lifelong learner and a man of many hobbies. He especially loved playing golf and tennis with his friends and family. He was a woodworker, craftsman, and photographer, and loved putting these talents to use at his home on Hamburg Lake. At sunrise and sunset, he could reliably be found on the water in his kayak, finding the best fishing spots and observing nature. He was a Michigan sports super-fan and loved watching the Michigan Marching Band.

Jim’s generous heart extended to his work life. Jim was a professor in the University of Michigan Department of Neurology and co-chief of the Neuromuscular Division. He was a member of the Medical School faculty since 2002, and enjoyed teaching and interacting with students and staff. Jim’s work focused on neuromuscular weakness. He provided exceptional care for patients grappling with a variety of neuromuscular diseases.

Above all, Jim was a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, friend, and colleague. Jim is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Sam (Maia), Max (Abby), and Jack; sisters, Karen (Dave) Saarinen and Katie (Tom) McGrath; and many dear family, friends, and colleagues. Jim was a wonderful father to his three sons and husband to his wife of 36 years.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to Huron River Watershed Council (www.hrwc.org/donate/) or Community Action Network (www.canwashtenaw.org/donate).
