Jane Stern passed away on November 23, 2021 at home in Ann Arbor, surrounded by her family. She was 88 years old.
Jane was born to Marion Grace Wells and William Wellwood Morriss in Detroit where she grew up with her brother, the late John William Morriss.
Jane traveled extensively, both as a young military wife and later for bridge tournaments as a Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. She was an active volunteer all her life, giving many hours to support Girl Scouting when her daughters were young, and in the garden club beautifying the public spaces at the condominium complex she later called home. She was interested in current events, as well as in her family history.
Jane loved the water. She was on the swim team at Northwestern High School; she was a third generation (of five) member of the Oak Hill Beach Company, her summer cottage on Cass Lake in Oakland County; she and her husband Burton wintered for many years in New Port Richey, Florida.
Jane is well remembered for her cheerful disposition and love of fun, for her genuine interest in what children were up to, and for her kindness and charity. She set a great example of what it means to be a citizen of the world.
Jane is survived by her husband, Burton L. Stern; her children, Leslie Clark, Jeffrey (Kathy) Clark, Tracy (Nabi) Lahooti, and Lyndsay (Coby) Clark-Schultz and their father, William Thomas Clark; and Burton’s children, Kim (Mark) Gleichert and Elizabeth (Hugh) Huntley and Deborah (Rich) Kiral; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren of both families to whom she was Grandma Jane, as well as extended family and friends.
There will be a celebration of Jane’s life next spring at Cass Lake.
