Obituary for Janet Carolyn Voss (Schaeffer)

Janet Carolyn Schaeffer Lucy Voss died peacefully on January 24, 2020 in Saline, MI at the age of 81.
Jan is survived by her children Dlorah Lucy of Saline and Angela (Christopher) Psychas of Ypsilanti,MI. Four grandchildren Brittney (Ryan Jones) Psychas of Canton, MI; Hailey (Eric Brand) Psychas of Charlotte, NC; Kyle Psychas of Ypsilanti, MI and Matthew Psychas of Ypsilanti, MI .

She is preceded in death by husbands Raymond Lucy, Rev.Robert Voss, parents Harold & Sarah Schaeffer and brothers Bill & Ken Schaeffer, granddaughter Alyssa Rae Psychas.

Jan was born on May 13, 1938 in Clare, Michigan to Harold and Sarah (Bauer) Schaeffer. She graduated from Clare high school in 1956. She was married in 1956 to Ray Lucy upon his return from Korea. They made homes in Clare, Kalamazoo and in Big Rapids welcomed their first daughter Lori. Five years later daughter Angie was born in Clare. They then made a home in Lansing as Ray was the owner of an Amoco gas station. In 1968, they moved to Ann Arbor and called it home until Ray’s death in 1982.

Jan was a payroll accountant at the University of Michigan. Jan was a 40+ year Michigan season football ticket holder. Jan loved her football Saturdays at The BIG HOUSE, until her health declined .

Jan retired from the U of M in 1997, the same year she married Rev. Robert Voss. After a brief time in Ixonia, Wisconsin they settled in Clare. On March 24, 2009 Bob became ill and passed away. Jan remained in Clare until 2016 when she moved to Saline to be near her daughter and son-in-law.

Jan had a deep Love for the Lord and was active in her churches. Currently, a member at Trinity Lutheran in Saline. Her Faith was the way she lived her life. Knowing she would go to Heaven was a joy .

She liked working with younger children, as a Sunday School and VBS teacher. Jan was active in Bible Study, Church Pot Lucks, bake and craft sales.

She was Nana to many including Brittney’s dear friend Kaitlin. Mama Luce to Kristen and Tony. Aunt Jan to several nieces and nephews.

Jan liked to travel to Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, in addition to many cruises.

Jan’s most blessed were her grandchildren Brittney, Hailey, Alyssa (deceased 1991) Kyle and Matthew. She was the proud Nana in the stands at all their sporting events as they were growing up.

Jan remained lifelong friends with Diane Degeer and Carol Crawford.

Jan was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when she was in her late 50’s. She was able to live many happy years , despite the physical challenges.

As Parkinson’s progressed Jan moved to Linden Square Assisted Living, in January 2019, Jan was active in card games, and bingo. Her beloved Yorkie Andy was able to stay with Jan until she was hospitalized the end of December.

Jan is survived by her daughters, grandchildren, Sister-In-Laws Bonnie and Betty Schaeffer, many nieces and nephews. Her Step -Children Deborah (David) Carlovsky, Crystal Lake, IL Rachel(Dale) Dahlke, Ixonia, WI.Mark (Crystal) Voss, Salem, WI.Paul (Berneice) Voss, Beach Park, IL. 12 Grandchildren (preceded in death by Aaron Carlovsky,) 13 Great-grandchildren.

Viewing will take place on Thursday, January 30th at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Rd, Ann Arbor, MI from 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm.

A funeral is scheduled for Friday, January 31, 2020 at 10:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 195 E Michigan Ave, Saline MI . Viewing from 9:00 am to 10:00 am before the service. A reception to follow at the church. Interment at Bethlehem Cemetery 2801 Jackson Rd, Ann Arbor MI, Pastor Mark Smith will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jan’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. The family would like to thank Care Line Hospice, University of Michigan 4A doctors, nurses, techs last but not least the loving staff at Linden Square for making her so happy her last year.
