Jean Hollowell Caine died December 19, 2020 at age 92 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Michigan as a result of complications from cancer.
Jean was born February 17, 1928 in Champaign, Illinois to Eugene and Mabel Gallion Hollowell. The family moved to Takoma Park, Maryland, where Jean graduated from high school. She then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1949 with a BS degree in Home Economics. She met her husband, Alfred B. Caine, at Iowa State, saying about their courtship “I chased him hard, and then I let him catch me.” They were married for 68 years until Al’s passing in 2018.
Jean and Al relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut; Louisville, Kentucky; Niskayuna, New York; Armonk, New York and back to Niskayuna as Al’s position with General Electric required. She raised their three children on a steady diet of well-prepared food, clear expectations, skillfully-sewn clothing and plenty of love. She lived a quiet life with Al after his retirement until their move to Coburg Village in Rexford, New York in 2012 where she joined the sewing club, became a devoted jigsaw puzzler with Al, and thoroughly enjoyed eating someone else’s cooking.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Alfred B. Caine. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Caine of Ann Arbor, MI and Nancy (Paul) Lane of Oakland, CA; son, Tom (Emily) Caine of San Jose, CA; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Following cremation and when the family can travel safely, Jean will be interred with Al at the Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
