Obituary for John William Fischer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John William Fischer at age 95 while living at Linden Square in Saline, on Thursday, November 10, 2022.
John (Fish) was born on November 2, 1927 to parents Roy W. and Katherine (Finkbeiner) Fischer of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy (Geoffrey) Crosbie; son, Jay (Charlene); grandchildren, Megan (Kyle) Mazurek, Alexander and Hannah Fischer, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Mary Hodge Fischer; parents, Roy W. and Katherine Fischer; a brother, Roy G. killed in Normandy and infant sister Marie K.
After graduating from Ann Arbor High School, John joined the U.S. Marine Corp in 1945 and was discharged August 1946 and returned to work at the Washtenaw Independent Dairy, Ann Arbor.
John married the love of his life, Gertrude Hodge, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Auburn, Indiana, on June 9, 1953. Family was the foundation of John's life, and he enjoyed the activities of his three grandchildren.
John grew up on Third Street – attending Bach Elementary, Slausen Junior High and Ann Arbor High and was a lifetime member of the Bethlehem United Church of Christ and the Saline American Legion Post 322. John retired from the State of Michigan Highway Department. In retirement, John worked at the Nie - Fontana Funeral Home on Carpenter Road, and was a part-time bartender at the Elk’s club on Eisenhower Parkway. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, golfing, traveling and helping out with the sauerkraut suppers at the Saline American Legion. He was often seen wearing red socks and carrying a red handkerchief. John loved chocolate candy and desserts.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Linden Square and Hospice Careline.
