Obituary for Joseph Patrick "Joe" Shields
Joseph “Joe” Patrick Shields, age 48, passed away unexpectedly on November 3, 2021.
Joe was born on April 6, 1973 in Abington, Pennsylvania to parents, John A. Shields, Jr. and Catherine R. (Haney) Shields. He graduated from high school to join the workforce, and was fortunate to work and take on many positions at Meijer in Ypsilanti, Michigan for the past 35 years.
Known to those who he held close, Joe was a “kid in a grown man’s body.” Spending time with his family was definitely a highlight, especially his special bond with his great nephews and nieces. Joe also was an avid sports fan, whether it was wrestling, football, and even baseball. He specifically enjoyed University of Michigan sports. Joe was quite the collector of numerous jerseys of teams he followed throughout the years. Wherever he travelled, Joe was never without his gnome and took pictures of his pal everywhere he went to share with family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John A. Shields, Jr. and Catherine R. (Haney) Shields; his brother, James Shields; and uncle, Msgr. James J. Shields.
Joe will be deeply missed by his siblings, Mary (Kevin) Timpe, John Shields, Edward (Rosa) Shields, Barbara (James) Goodman, and Michael Shields; nephews and nieces, Thomas, Shaundra, Rachael, Karen, Caitlin, Chris, Meghan (Sean), Ron (Bethany), Mitchell, Anita, Joey, Melissa, Jimmy (Krystal), and Teresa; and great-nephews and nieces, Taylor, Nathan, Brady, Reagan, Kara, Samantha, Jacob, Madison, Jax, Billy, Cameron, Samantha, Eddie, Aspen, Adeline, Chase, Brandon, and Emelyn.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 4:00-8:00pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. A rosary service will be held at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will take place the following day, Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 11:30 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 2250 E. Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor. Friends and family are welcome to gather at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Marble Park Cemetery in Milan at 1:00 pm.
