Obituary for Laura Belle Tweedie Roberts

Laura passed away peacefully at age 87 on January 20, 2022 due to Alzheimer’s. She is buried in the Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She is predeceased by parents, Harold and Thelma (Covey) Tweedie. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Gordon A. Roberts; children, Cindy Neam (Joe), Glen Roberts, and Edsel Roberts (Debbie); grandchildren, Jennifer Roberts, Brad Roberts, and Sarah Neam; and siblings, Del Tweedie, Luanna Martin, and Harry Tweedie.

Laura was born in Midland, Michigan on July 30, 1934 and lived there until graduating high school. She then attended the University of Michigan where she received a BA degree from the LS&A College and a MA degree in Biology with a focus on Botany.

Laura came from a family of makers with diverse talents and interests. She was an intuitive creator, inventor, and individual thinker who forged a unique path in life. Her lifelong study and practice of botany and organic gardening led her to create health through food. She expressed herself artistically through sewing, belly dance, music, and art, and shared her knowledge by teaching silk screening and yoga through the Ann Arbor YMCA.

When she was in her early 40s, she took her first class in Iyengar Yoga at the YMCA. She immersed herself in the study of yoga, traveling to India to study with BKS Iyengar three times, and again sharing her knowledge through teaching classes at the Ann Arbor YMCA. This eventually led her to found Yogaware®, a company that featured clothing and props designed and sewn by Laura that facilitated the study of Iyengar Yoga.

Laura derived much joy from sharing her knowledge, wisdom and creativity with others through teaching and friendship. Having wonderful friendships and both mentoring and being mentored were the key to life experiences that took her in so many interesting directions.

As Laura’s abilities declined, the Silver Club at the U of M Turner Geriatric Center provided her a friendly, supportive environment where she had the opportunity to continue to have involvement with music and art. We would like to thank all the wonderful people who provided loving care for Laura as her abilities diminished over the years. This includes those who supported her at home, Silver Club and Arbor Care on Independence where she was under hospice care until her passing.
