Obituary for Kay Davis

Lois Kay Davis passed away on March 4, 2023.

Kay was born on January 28, 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the daughter of John Cunningham II and Jacqueline and Edwin Dukes. Kay was raised in Ypsilanti, Michigan and attended Belleville High School.

Kay met the love of her life, Milton J. Davis at Town and Country Trailer Park as children. According to legend, the moment Kay put her eyes on Milton, she told her best friend that she was going to marry him someday. They were married on June 8, 1968, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In 1976, Kay and Milton moved their family to Manchester, so they could raise their four daughters and build their home in the country.

Kay enjoyed sitting on her deck and looking out into the field to watch the deer while she listened to the many birds that would visit her. She especially loved watching the hummingbirds. When she was younger, her favorite pastime was spending time with her mother, playing Yahtzee well into the twilight. She taught her daughters and grandkids how to play in hopes of passing along the tradition.

Kay was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 423 Auxiliary. For many years Milton and Kay would plan the post’s annual family Christmas party. She made sure that every child in attendance had a gift chosen just for them. She loved playing Mr. and Mrs. Claus with her husband and seeing all the children light up as they received their gifts! Kay and Milton also ran a food pantry for needy veterans for many years. She dedicated many years to the Veteran community alongside Milton.

Throughout her life, Kay’s greatest achievements were being a wonderful wife to her husband, a loving mother to her daughters, and an affectionate nana to her grandchildren. She made sure that her family knew just how much they were loved, with daily affirmations and unconditional support. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and always looked forward to hearing what was going on in their lives. Whenever any of us left her house, she made sure we called her and let her know we made it home safely and she was never the first to hang up on the phone when we said goodbye. We never left without a hug and her saying “I love you.” Even in passing she was able to tell us how much she loved us all.

Kay is preceded in death by her father, John Cunningham II; her mother and step-father Jackie and Eddie Dukes; and her brother, Kenneth “Skip” Cunningham.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Milton; her daughters, Jacqueline (Patrick) Davis-Green, Angela Davis, Kimberly (James Phillips) Davis, Michelle (Jason Swain) Davis-Swain; her grandchildren, Myria Russell, Connor Davis-Green, Sydney Davis-Green, Emily Mast, Joshua Mast, John Mast, Elysa Mast, Laszlo Phillips, Everett Phillips, Aubrey Swain, and Adelyn Swain; as well as her puppies Abbey, Kate, and Ziva.

Our family would like to thank the following: Chelsea Community Hospital and the Palliative Care Team for the compassionate care Kay received during her stay, the Ann Arbor Home Infusion for the many years of care, and her at home with nurse Kristy Raab, who became her friend.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 20, 2023 at 2:00 pm with a gathering beginning at 1:00 pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.
