Obituary for Margaret M. Gyde

Margaret, age 97, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2023 in Brighton, MI. She was born on May 31, 1925 in Alpena, MI to Sidney and Nora (Elmer) DeKett and grew up in Harrisville, MI. She spent a lot of her childhood at the lighthouse at Sturgeon Pointe and at Lake Huron. The summer after Margaret graduated high school, she worked at the Willow Run bomber plant as a riveter working on the wing of the B24. Margaret received her Bachelor’s degree at Central Michigan University and she became a 5th grade elementary teacher at Northville Elementary School where she taught for 13 years. During this time, she received her Master’s degree at Michigan State University. During her time in Northville, she met Edgar Gyde, Jr. and they got married on August 5, 1961.

Margaret was an active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor, MI. She served as a Northfield Twp. election inspector for many years. Margaret also enjoyed 11 years as the editor of the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau Newspaper.

She is survived by two loving children: son, Daniel Lee (Jennifer Lou), daughter, Jennifer Kay (Frank) Morris and grandson, Zacory Dale (Katie Rose) Morris; sisters-in-law, Evelyn DeKett, Annie Gyde Wessel, Ethel Gyde Paul, and many caring, helpful nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edgar; three brothers, Leonard (Gladys Hardy), K. Ward (Regina Kreiner) and Kenneth; two sisters; Ruby DeKett Haynes and Ruth DeKett; her parents; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Wessel and Guy Paul.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Margaret’s honor to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 2945 E. Northfield Church Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48105 or to the Huron Valley Lutheran High School online HERE. or by mail to 33740 Cowan Rd, Westland, MI 48185.

Visitation will be held Sunday, January 22, 2023 from 3-8pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103. A funeral service will take place Monday, January 23, 2023 at 10am with visitation beginning at 9am at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, MI. Burial to follow at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family requests masks while attending the services.
