Obituary

Marilyn Joyce Schmid, age 90, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2020, at home surrounded by the love of her family. She was born August 5, 1929, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Frederick and Harriet Etzel. She married her middle school sweetheart, Fredrick Schmid, who preceded her in death in 2003. Together, they had three children, Betsy Fojtik, Janette Scarbrough (predeceased) (John), and Thomas Schmid. She is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Marilyn, beloved mom, grandma, another grandma, was the heart of her family for three generations. She appreciated the simplicity of living a life with those she loved and generously gave her time, attention, and heart. The impact she had on our lives is evident in the precious memories we can now share and take comfort in. She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. with a gathering before beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Nie Family Funeral Home; 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Audubon for her love of feeding and watching birds; National Audubon Society 225 Varick St, New York, NY 10014 or online here: https://act.audubon.org/onlineactions/zdcV6JL7Vk6h93vGsK2ZCQ2?ms=digital-fund-web-website_nas-topmenu

To me, she was one of those great neighborhood moms who gathered in all the kids like her own chicks.

My mom deeply appreciated her friendship as one of those old fashioned good neighbors.
