Obituary for Mark Allen Huber

Mark Allen Huber, 73, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away on January 8th 2023 after a year and a half long battle with ALS.

Mark was born on November 12th, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan where he grew up across the street from his grandparents. He was a proud graduate of Notre Dame Catholic High School in Harper Woods. In 1969, Mark was in a horrible snow mobile accident that nearly took his life. This accident left him with an artificial hip, and he spent over a year in recovery aided by his family.

After recovery, Mark graduated from Lawrence Technological University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

He met Elaine in 1973 and they married in 1975. In 1978, they moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor, where he would live with Elaine for the rest of this life.

Mark had a successful automotive career that started as an owner of a Maaco Body Shop. He then moved on to a vehicle rollover research position at the University of Michigan. Mark was then hired by the Chrysler Corporation where he spent the majority of his career working on advanced safety systems and earning patents in early airbag technology. After retiring from Chrysler, he continued his safety work at Mercedes Benz. Mark was also passionate about running his and Elaine’s business, Huber Antiques & Interiors.

Mark treasured spending time with his family, especially when they could get away on family trips to their cabin in Lewiston, MI. They also loved traveling to Florida to enjoy the beach and fishing or heading to their property in the Smokey Mountains.

From the time he was a little boy, Mark loved baseball. From playing as a child at the local park in Detroit, to becoming an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers, he rarely missed a game in retirement.

Mark became a fan of The Beatles in the 1960’s and his love of their music remained with him throughout his lifetime. He owned more Beatles music and memorabilia than he would like to admit. He even found comfort from their music in his final days.

In retirement, Mark and Elaine cherished spending time with their children, but even more so with their beloved grandchildren. They also loved lazy days taking pontoon rides at the lake and Mark was even caught dozing off while driving from time to time.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Joan Huber. He is survived by his wife Elaine, three children Tammy (Jeff), Matthew (Amanda), Alex (Julie), and six grandchildren. He was a loving brother to Laura, Gail, Philip, and Glenn.

Mark’s legacy will carry on, reminding us to always be strong no matter what adversity we face. He would want us to take time to have fun, be silly, and always make time to spend with family and God.

Visitation will take place Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 4-8pm with a Rosary at 7pm at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103. A funeral mass will be held 11am Friday, January 13, 2023 with visitation beginning at 10:30am at Old St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 5671 Whitmore Lake Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48105. Interment at Forest Hill Cemetery, Ann Arbor, MI and a lunch to follow.
