Obituary for Miguel Antonio Garrido

Miguel Antonio Garrido, age 77, passed away on April 22, 2021 in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Miguel was born on March 12, 1944 to parents, Miguel Garrido Pulido and Carmen Tobaja del Castillo, in Huelva, Spain. When he was 12 years old, Miguel’s family left their native Spain and moved to the America’s. Miguel had resided in Madrid, Spain; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Detroit, Michigan; Montreal, Canada; Mexico City, Mexico; Concord, California; and ultimately resided in south east Michigan including Macomb Twp., Chesterfield Twp. and Ypsilanti. In 1965, Miguel met his soon to be wife, Ana Maria Lopez, in Detroit, Michigan, later to marry in December 1966 in Mexico City. They were married for 54 years and together they raised their two children, who graciously blessed them with four grandchildren. Miguel enjoyed family road trips which took him to various states. He will be remembered most for his intelligence, his kind and caring spirit, and his always courteous and respectful manner.

Miguel dedicated his life to provide for his family. Miguel studied Mechanical Engineering at Wayne State University, and worked in industrial and manufacturing design throughout his career, mostly in automotive after settling in Michigan. He had a strong work ethic, often working long hours and weekends to ensure his family was taken care of. Additionally, Miguel and Ana worked as freelance translators in the evenings to earn additional income.

In his retirement years, Miguel discovered his enjoyment of modern technologies such as streaming services and internet videos. He often watched classic movies, historical documentaries, and anything to do with his native Spain. Of late, he also started taking and sharing pictures and videos of his grandchildren with a smartphone. He also helped instruct Ana on sewing techniques that he picked up as a young boy by watching his late mother. Together they started making costumes for their grandson Alex. Sadly, Miguel was never able to return to his homeland before he passed away.

Miguel was a man of Catholic faith and is preceded in death by his parents, Miguel and Carmen, who will welcome him in heaven.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ana Maria; son, Miguel (Jackie) Garrido; his daughter, Mary (Greg) Zejer; his siblings, Jose Luis (Yaya) Garrido, Mary Merrill, Antonio (Gladys) Garrido, Mary Carmen Garrido, Isabel Cutler; four grandchildren, Christian, Julia, Alex, Liam; and numerous nieces and nephews.
