Obituary for Mildred 'Millie' Aili Scholl

Mildred "Millie" Aili Scholl
Sept. 18, 1932 – Dec. 16, 2022

Millie passed away unexpectedly and peacefully, surrounded by family, after a fulfilling life as wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many. She was born in Collingswood, New Jersey on September 18, 1932 to Wayne and Aili Mackey. She grew up in the Chicago area attending New Trier High School in Winnetka, where she met Paul, the love of her life for 73 years. Though apart for four years while she attended Michigan State College and he at Northwestern University, they married after graduation in 1954 during Paul’s leave from the Navy. They came to Ann Arbor in 1960 and soon after were blessed with the first of their four children.

Millie was a dedicated wife and mother, juggling all of her kids’ schedules and making sure they got to swim, scout, piano, skating, and tennis lessons. She selflessly loved her family- managing a busy household, planning and packing meals for days spent at Huron Valley Swim Club, and the many family camping trips. She used her degree in marketing as she held garage sales almost yearly and then worked at Talbots. Millie’s upbeat, outgoing, and friendly nature made people feel readily comfortable, and she loved serving others. Even at the age of 90 she was regularly visiting friends who had lost their spouses, bringing joy to their lives through her positive and encouraging words. Into her 80‘s Millie continued to serve the community, volunteering at Arbor Hospice and St. Francis looking to support others in their difficult times.

After her kids were grown, she took up tennis, playing well into her 80s and for over 30 years with one group of ladies. Millie knew the importance of staying active both socially and physically and involved herself in exercise classes, biking, walking, playing bridge, and spending time with friends and family. She loved attending events involving her grandchildren, supporting them in every endeavor. Millie will be greatly missed by those who knew her. May her optimistic and encouraging life inspire others to do likewise.

Millie is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Paul; son, Bob of Saline; daughters, Kathy of Novi, Bev (Tim) Hoerauf of Saline, and Karen (Tom) Bejin of Rochester Hills; and her grandchildren, Elena and Jeremy Hoerauf, and Thomas, Mike and Claire Bejin.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2250 E Stadium Blvd, Ann Arbor, MI, on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 1:30 pm. Please see the St. Francis of Assisi website to view the Mass virtually.

Her remains will be interred at the Memorial Garden at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Ann Arbor.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent in her honor to Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.

We invite you to share memories and stories of Millie.
