Obituary for Nancy Marie Christiansen

Nancy Marie Christiansen, age 85, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 11, 2022.

Nancy was born on October 8, 1936 in Kimball, South Dakota to parents Harold McKinley and Orpha “Dorothy” (Jones) Norman. At age three, the Norman family relocated to a farm in Denison, Iowa. She graduated from Denison High School in 1954 and then attended the University of Iowa where she received a certificate in Dental Hygiene in 1956.

Nancy met Richard L. Christiansen while attending high school when he asked her to go to a Homecoming Dance. The two married on June 24, 1956 in Denison, Iowa and began a life together. She supported Dick while he was finishing dental school and relocated several times to various cities in Iowa, California, Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland, until finally settling in Michigan in 1982. Since 2000, Nancy and Dick enjoyed wintering together when possible in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dick and Nancy were blessed with three children, Mark Richard, David Norman, and Laura Marie and seven amazing grandchildren who brought so much joy to her life.

In her spare time, Nancy enjoyed being a longtime member of P.E.O Sisterhood and has been active in different church groups at both Trinity Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor and St. Michael Lutheran Church of Canton. She looked forward to learning and trying new culinary techniques with her friends in a local Cooking Club. Nancy and Dick traveled the world together- experiencing over 50 different countries during the course of their marriage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Dorothy Norman; her sister, Anna Lucy Raynard.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Richard L. Christiansen; her children, Mark (Tanya) Christiansen, David (Dana) Christiansen, and Laura (Matthew) Diamond; her grandchildren, Travis, Connor, Jacob, Morgan, Colton, and Noah and Isaac; as well as many dear nieces, nephews, and cousins near and far.

Funeral Services were held in Denison, Iowa. Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at St. Michael Lutheran Church of Canton, 7000 North Sheldon Road, Canton, Michigan 48187.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Nancy’s name to The P.E.O. Sisterhood or to The University of Michigan Faculty Women’s Club or the mission of your local church.
