Obituary for Penelope "Penny" Sue (Westman) Sibert

Penelope “Penny” Sue Sibert, age 83, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.

Penny was born on October 18, 1938 to parents Theodore and Echo (Lowe) Westman in Grafton, North Dakota. Later, the family relocated to the Ann Arbor area. While taking classes at Eastern Michigan University, Penny met Thomas Sibert. The two married in 1958 and started a family in Ypsilanti, Michigan where they raised their two sons, James and Thomas Robert.

She worked for the Ypsilanti High School as a secretary in the counseling department for 20 years before retiring. In her spare time, Penny enjoyed being creative and dabbled in many arts and crafts projects. She especially excelled at making silk floral arrangements.

Penny was an incredibly kind and social woman. She looked forward to many weekly social gatherings with local bridge clubs, the Ypsilanti Ladies Literary Club, and the Red Hat Society, and the Friends of Lakeview Swim Club. Penny also was active with volunteering with the Ypsilanti Historical Museum. Penny loved music, dancing, and social gatherings of any type and she could talk your ear off!

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Echo Westman.

Penny will be deeply missed by her husband of 64 wonderful years, Thomas Sibert; her sons, James (Kristen) Sibert and Thomas Robert “Rob” Sibert; her grandchildren, Joseph (Meade) Sibert and Daniel (fiancé, Rebecca Keith) Sibert; and her great-grandchildren, Ida and Raina Sibert. She will also be missed by her brother, Robert (Arleen) Westman; her brother-in-law, Bruce (Georgia) Sibert; niece, Greta Sibert; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many special friends.

The Sibert family would like to acknowledge the amazing care and kindness that was provided by Arbor Hospice and their staff members.

Private cremation services have taken place. An interment will take place at Washtenong Memorial Park Cemetery of Ann Arbor at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made in Penny’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
