Obituary for Randall Wayne Whitcomb

Doctor Randall Wayne Whitcomb, 65 of Ann Arbor, Michigan, after living a purpose-driven life, passed away at his home on Sunday April 19th surrounded by his family. As with everything in his life, he was strong and courageous until the very end in his battle with ALS.

Randy was born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, in 1954 to Robert and Janice (Hosier) Whitcomb. In his early years he formed a love of learning, which extended throughout his life. Starting in 1965 he spent his formative years in Racine, Wisconsin, developing a passion for running and competing. Some of his accomplishments include setting a state record by running a 4 minute, 4 second mile, and graduating valedictorian of the 1972 William Horlick High School senior class.

Randy attended Tabor College where he met the love of his life, Rita Kreutziger, and they were married in 1975. Their daughter Katie was born in 1981 and son Kevin in 1984.

Randy attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine graduating with honors in 1981, and was bestowed the Milton McGreevy award as Outstanding Resident in 1984. In 1985, Randy became a Medical Staff Fellow of Endocrinology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Following this fellowship, he joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School and became an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Randy spent the remainder of his career in various pharmaceutical development roles, where he was able to use his training and passion for helping others. That was ultimately his mission.

Beyond all of these professional accomplishments, Randy’s greatest treasure in life was his family. He is survived by his mother, Janice Whitcomb; sister, Linda (Curt) Nelson; brother, David (Joetta) Whitcomb; wife of 44 years, Rita Whitcomb; daughter ,Katie (Matt) Conner; and son, Kevin (Trisha) Whitcomb. He was a beloved Papa to Jace, Quinn, Emerson and Jordan. He will leave a legacy of love for teaching God’s word and faith in Jesus Christ. He will be remembered as a doctor to many, and a caring person with a generous spirit.

A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date.
