Obituary for Richard Joseph "Dick" Giba

Richard Joseph “Dick” Giba passed away on January 21, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Giba and Helen Alice (Kozak) Giba, and his son, Andrew Michael Giba. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Therese (Lucich) Giba; his 2 daughters, Caroline Marie Lynden (Paul) and Elisa Marie Ghezzi (Stephen); eight grandchildren, Matthew Paul Lynden, Amanda Marie Lynden, Elena Therese Ghezzi, Joseph Stephen Ghezzi, Luke William Ghezzi, Natalie Marie Ghezzi, Dominic Jonathan Ghezzi, and Michael Fabian Ghezzi; two brothers, John Michael Giba (Cindy) of Wonder Lake, Illinois and Joseph John Giba of Canton, Georgia; and one sister, Kathleen Ann Giba of Greensboro, North Carolina. Dick met his wife Stephanie at Youngstown State University while both were undergrad students. He’d often say it was love at first sight. They married in 1964. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Youngstown State in 1963, Dick began his professional career in the automotive industry with General Motors in Dayton, Ohio. While there he earned his Master’s in Business and Marketing from the University of Dayton. He left General Motors to work for the Upjohn Company in 1975, which brought him to the Detroit area in 1977. Dick loved his work and the people he worked with, so much so, that when he “retired” in 2001 from Dow Chemical Company, he immediately took a job with Solvay, and retired for a 2nd time 2 years later. Dick was a humble and self-effacing man, who would tell people he was a project manager, when really, he was the ultimate “networker” before anyone had coined the term, bringing together people from all aspects of the automotive industry to produce a single product—from conception to final production. Dick was the quintessential family man, who particularly loved being involved in the lives of his grandchildren, from chauffeur to golf coach. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, graciously serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in various capacities for 40 years. He especially enjoyed his early morning quiet time in the Adoration Chapel each week, was active as an extraordinary Eucharistic minister, and together with his wife Stephanie, led several marriage ministry programs, chief among them, the Living in Love marriage enrichment and marriage preparation series. A diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis in 2005 led Dick to the local support group and eventually to serve as president of the Detroit area Myasthenia Gravis Association for over a decade. Dick was an avid golfer from his youth, with a handicap of 17, and all who knew him knew that when he had free time he would be on the links from early spring till just before the first snow fall each year. He will be sorely missed, this wonderful man of God, by family and friend alike. Rest in peace, dear one, till we meet again. Visitation will be held Friday, January 31, 2020 at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103 from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 am Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4000 Ave Maria Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48105 where a visitation will be held one hour prior to the mass. Interment will take place immediately following the mass at Arborcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Association, 1000 John R, Suite 111, Troy, MI 48083 (mgadetroit.com) or to the Pastoral Matrimonial Renewal Center marriage ministry (livinginlove.org).
