Obituary

Obituary for Richard Alan Robinson

Richard Alan (Dick) Robinson, 85, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2020, under hospice care in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was born August 21, 1934, in Chillicothe, Ohio. He was the son of George Robinson and Rosina Morlock, who immigrated to the US from England and Germany after World War I, and the brother of Donald, born in 1923. Dick attended Oakwood High School near Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Harvard University in 1956 with a BA in History and in 1961 with an MBA. He was married to Maralyn Winter Robinson of Grosse Point, Michigan, from 1963 until her death in 1999. They lived in Racine, Wisconsin; Effingham, Surrey, England; Houston, Texas; and Greenwich, Connecticut. Dick worked in those locations with the J. I. Case Company and then for its parent company, Tenneco, Inc., for over forty years in total. At Tenneco, he held positions including Treasurer and Pension Fund Manager.

Dick thoroughly enjoyed his career in finance and his life with his family. He liked to reminisce about their years abroad in England and their summer vacations in northern Wisconsin. Dick was a patron of the arts and took great pleasure in attending the Houston Symphony and Grand Opera while living in Texas, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Greenwich Symphony after moving to Connecticut. Dick appreciated a good long walk in the rain and a lively baseball game. He was a consummate history buff and was always eager to discuss politics. One of his favorite quotes was “As Ohio goes, so goes the nation.” Dick loved to travel and to learn, and he took great pride in his English garden, but without a doubt his favorite pastime was spending time with his sons and family.

Dick is survived by his sons, William Carleton Robinson of Summit, New Jersey, and Bruce Marshall Robinson of Ann Arbor, Michigan; by his daughters-in-law, Jacqueline Jabara Robinson and Laura Carter Robinson; by his four grandchildren, Linda Winter Robinson, William Kenneth Robinson, Claire Porter Robinson, and Caroline Berridge Robinson; and by his first cousin, Elaine Caughman of Roswell, GA.

A service will be held on Saturday, January 25th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 306 N. Division St., Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Episcopal Relief and Development, P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058 (phone 855-312-4325; online www.episcopalrelief.org).
