Obituary for Robert "Bob" John Barth

Robert John Barth died at 68 on January 21, 2022 in hospice care after an extended battle with cancer. Bob was born in Ann Arbor on August 11, 1953 to Jennie and William Barth.

Bob grew up in Ann Arbor, attending Eberwhite, Slauson, and Pioneer High public schools, and graduated in 1971. He worked for several years in local print shops as a finish machine operator, most of the latter years at the University of Michigan Printing Service. He transferred to the University of Michigan Graduate Library in 2006 and continued to work there until his retirement in 2015.

Bob leaves behind his wife Mary Lu and children Anne Hellie (Jeff Miller), Michael Barth (Rebecca), Mark Barth (Abby), and Katherine Kwiatkowski (Matthew). He also leaves grandchildren Jason Ortega (Nalia), Nathan and Marcus Scott, James Barth, Austin and Saerin Barth, Zosia and Staciek Kwiatkowski, and great-grandson Elias Ortega.

Bob loved his family, cooking, traveling (especially cruising), Michigan football and basketball, and his 1994 Chevrolet Impala. He was an usher for several years at football and basketball games, and loved going to holiday bowl games. He was thoroughly enjoying his retirement, entertaining and visiting with friends, often cruising in mid-winter, and taking two extended RV trips through the southwest visiting national parks.

His life was celebrated with a memorial service on January 23 at St. Clare’s Episcopal Church and at a celebration this summer at the family home. Memorial donations in Bob’s memory can be made to Meals on Wheels (Click Here) and the American Cancer Society (Click Here).
