Obituary for Robert D. Pehlke

Professor Robert D. Pehlke, born in Ferndale, MI in 1933, passed away at age 86 on October 22, 2019. Dr. Pehlke was Professor Emeritus at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He studied at the University of Michigan (B.S.E. 1955, Metallurgical Engineering), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (S.M. 1958 and Sc.D. 1960, Metallurgy) and at the Technical University, Aachen, Germany as a Fulbright Fellow, 1956-57. He was Visiting Professor at Tohoku Univrsity, Sendai, Japan in 1994. For more than 40 years (1960-2002), he taught at the University of Michigan and served as Department Chairman from 1973 to 1984. Dr. Pehlke’s research career has produced more than 300 publications including 11 books, and he has received numerous awards. In 2018 at age 83, he published a memoir entitled Adventures of a Materials Scientist. He has consulted with many major corporations all over the world, and has participated in more than 100 legal cases as an expert witness. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Julie and is survived by his children Robert Jr. (Lowell, MA), Lisa (Jacksonville, FL), and David (Westlake Village, CA), his daughter-in-law, David’s wife Amy, their two sons Jackson and Joseph, and several in-laws, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that a charitable contribution be made to the Julie A. Pehlke Memorial Fund 7969, PEO Foundation, Treasurer's Dept., 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312. The family will receive visitors on Friday, November 8th at the Nie Family Funeral Home at 3767 West Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, MI. Visitation will start at 10:00am. A memorial service is scheduled at 11:00 a.m.
