Obituary for Russell LaVerne Ottmar

Russell LaVerne Ottmar, age 74, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 27, 2021.

Russell was born on April 17, 1946 to parents LaVerne and Mildred (Denham) Ottmar in Ann Arbor, Michigan and raised with his siblings, Judith, Catherine, and Helen. He graduated from Ann Arbor High School and enlisted in the United States Army in October of 1963. After being honorably discharged from his military service in October of 1966, he began a long career in the roofing industry and worked locally in the Washtenaw County area.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Russ fell in love with fishing on the Huron River as a child and returned to “his river” often to enjoy the sport and comradery with other fishermen. He was often accompanied by his dogs, who were always well trained and in tune with Russ. He was proud to be called “Uncle Russ'' by many people who loved him, which included nieces, nephews, and close family friends. His infectious and loud laugh always filled the room with happiness and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, LaVerne and Mildred Ottmar, his half-brother and sister-in-law, D. Ronald and Bernice Karr, and his sister and brother-in-law, Judith and James Presser.

Russell will be deeply missed by his sisters, Catherine (Jon) Porter and Helen Vigil, many loving nieces and nephews, and his loyal and constant companion, Bessie the dog.

Memorial donations can be made in Russell’s name to the
Disabled Veterans of America.
