Obituary for Sally Frakes
On September 9, 1926, Sally Hauser Frakes was born in Ann Arbor to Grover and Olga Hauser. She was the fourth of four children – sister, Carol Kempf; brother, Bill; and sister Helen. She is survived by her three children and eight grandchildren: Ann and Michael Hause of Plymouth, Robert Frakes of Dearborn, William and Susan Frakes of Ann Arbor and daughter-in-law, Melanie Frakes of Dearborn.
She lived in Michigan her entire life. She attended school in Ann Arbor and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1944. In high school she worked at a card shop on Fifth Avenue and after graduation began a career in the Admissions Office of the University of Michigan. She met her future husband, Robert “Lyle” through her a coworker, Betty. Betty was married to Lyle’s brother. After a brief courtship and engagement, they were married in a small ceremony on Campus in the Chapel at the Women’s League on August 16, 1947.
Sally and Lyle lived in the upper flat of a home on Huron and Division. Lyle was a UM student and Sally worked at the University until she gave birth to Ann in July 1950. In July 1951 they moved to a new neighborhood in Dearborn where they welcomed their two sons, Robert in 1954 and William in 1958. The neighborhood was teaming with young families where they established many new friendships. Sally became involved in the women’s group at the YMCA in Dearborn where she and Lyle through which they made many lifelong friends. Sally was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and assisted in the Sunday School office. She like cooking, baking, vegetable and flower gardening and vacation planning. After 27 years and as retirement got closer for Lyle, they moved to a lakefront home on Pleasant Lake near Manchester. With old and new friends, relatives they hosted lots of social gatherings at their Lake House. Through these years they welcomed their eight grandchildren: Julie, Carrie, Angela, Natalie, Joe, Ava, Robbie and Ethan in the span of ten years. So much family fun occurred at the Pleasant Lake home where Sally made everyone feel welcome.
Moving back to Ann Arbor in 1999, Sally reestablished her membership at her family church, Zion Lutheran Church and joined a community and social club Arbor-Ann’s with a few friends from Pleasant Lake and Ann Arbor. She was reunited with childhood schoolmates and neighborhood friends through monthly lunch meetings and donuts at Dimo’s on Saturday mornings. She lovingly cared for Lyle at home in the last few years of his life. Serious health problems only seemed to make her stronger through the years after Lyle passed. She remained quite active until a few falls forced her to slow down. Her children and grandchildren lit up her life in the past few years and made her very happy and proud.
A Memorial Service is planned for Saturday, February 15th at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, MI. Memorial gathering at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. with luncheon to follow.
