Obituary for Sarah Musil (Karsch)

Sarah Musil (Karsch) lost her brave battle with cancer on December 16, 2021.

She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 14, 1972. Her family moved to Ann Arbor when Sarah was 8 months old. She attended Wines, Forsythe MYA, and Community High, and then Central Michigan and West Virginia University. Among her many attributes, Sarah had great empathy, a passion to help others, and remarkable ability as a physical and emotional healer. Her family recognized her healing ability as a little girl. For example, her dad recalls how just receiving Sarah’s touch and kind words helped relieve symptoms when he was sick in bed. In recovering from her own back surgery, Sarah experienced the benefits of massage therapy and discovered her own ability to release the pain of others through touch.

After a period of training and study with leaders in the field, and working in various practices, she became an elite massage therapist specializing in myofascial release. Sarah established a highly successful practice of her own in the heart of her beloved downtown Ypsilanti. As a proud ‘Ypsilantian’, she promoted local shops and merchants, frequented the Farmer’s Market and Ypsilanti Food Co-op, and she loved to hang out at the Corner Brewery with her husband Mike to enjoy local fare with friends and family. Sarah was committed to the preservation of Planet Earth and anything related to nature and the outdoors. Together with Mike, she created flower and veggie gardens that would make anybody proud – her roses are stunning. Sarah and Mike loved animals living in the wild, from butterflies and toads to birds and mammals, and their house was a haven for rescue dogs and cats that became their wonderful four-legged kids. She was an avid hiker of the trails, both local and in northern Michigan. Her ‘Happy Place’ was the Standeasy, a remote family cottage in rural New Brunswick, Canada, where she loved to connect with family and friends, canoe, fish and shower outside under an elevated garden sprinkling can. Sarah was not reluctant to bait her own hook or take a catch off the hook!

In addition, Sarah was an awesome cribbage player who was seldom defeated. She loved Michigan football, devoured pink Starburst and the Canadian candies Smarties and Chicken Bones, and was proud to be left-handed! She was a faithful friend and Sarah and Mike’s wide circle of friends was always welcomed into their charming 100-year old home on Haven St. Her family adored Sarah and she adored her family. One of Sarah’s favorite things was hanging out with her Canadian and American cousins and she was proud to be in the middle of the pack of the cousins’ lineup according to both age and height. Sarah was an amazing daughter, a loving wife, a loyal sister, and a proud aunt of her nieces and nephews. This world is truly a better place because of Sarah – she was loved by all.

Sarah’s many positive attributes were enhanced by her loving husband of 24 years, Michael Musil. Also surviving are her mother and father, Nora and Fred Karsch, and her brother, Douglas and sister-in-law, Susan, all of Ann Arbor; her Mother-in-law, Laura Rowe (Dick) of Middleburg, FL; her brother-in-law, Andrew Musil and sister-in-law Diane, of St. Augustine, FL; and her nieces and nephews, Brendan, Kaylie and Alex Karsch and Ryan and Lauren Musil.
