Obituary for Shirley Ann (Aamlid) Donnelly

Shirley died peacefully at her home after a very long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Shirley was born in Bridgewater, South Dakota where she grew up. She later attended the nursing program at South Dakota State University and completed her nursing clinicals at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Upon gradation she and a friend, another new nurse, decided to come to Ann Arbor to work at The University of Michigan Hospital where Shirley worked until her retirement. There she met Stephen Donnelly and they married in 1958. She was also an amazing seamstress, collected owls, thimbles, and Santa’s. Above all else, she found great joy in any new babies that joined the family.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Donnelly; her parents, Abe and Clara Aamlid; and her brother, Robert Aamlid.

She is survived by her children, Keven (Lynn), Tim, Susan, Chris (Madge), and Beth; her grandchildren, Eric Bodley, Andrew Bodley, Rooty Jackson-Donnelly, Austin Donnelly, Leslie Donnelly, Connor Donnelly, Shane Donnelly, Ian Donnelly, and Madison Velding Van Dam; and her five great-grandchildren, Kamryn, Zoey, Jackson, Owen, and Ethan.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Friends and family are welcome to gather at 10:00 am.
