Obituary for Shirley Mae (Logan) Hanson

Shirley Mae (Logan) Hanson of Ypsilanti, Michigan passed away quietly in her sleep on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.

She was born December 8, 1940, the daughter of Clifford and Astrid (Rytty) Logan in Chicago, Illinois and spent her childhood in the Ashland, Wisconsin area where she was very active in school activities including playing the coronet in the high school band.

She loved to tell stories of skating on frozen ponds, tobogganing and sleigh rides in the Lake Superior winters of her youth.

Leaving home in her teens, Shirley moved to Milwaukee and then to southern Michigan in her twenties.

Always taking care of others, Shirley worked as a patient caregiver most of her life. She retired from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after more than 20 years and was very proud of her role in training others.

The Mackinac area held a special place in Shirley’s heart and her children and grandchildren have fond memories of trips they made with her to “the Island” as well as camping trips all over Michigan.

She was preceded in death by her second husband, John “Jack” Hanson, with whom she enjoyed traveling and visiting casinos.

She is survived by her children, Tammi (Mark) Marvin of Jackson, MI, Douglas R. “Dutch” (Donna) Nie II of Milan, MI, Jody Nie of Ypsilanti, MI, and Mindy (Mike) Rodger of Jackson, MI, eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm, Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Nie Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Carpenter Road Chapel, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48108.
