Obituary for Sue E. Wilson

Sue E. Wilson passed away on Wednesday, October 20th, 2021 at the age of 73.

On May 30, 1948 Robert and Mina Given welcomed their daughter, Susan Elizabeth Given into their family. Raised with her brother, David, Sue spent her younger years watching the Detroit Tigers #6, Al Kaline and as the only girl that played baseball in the street with the neighborhood boys. A self-described “band nerd”, she graduated from Ferndale High School in 1966 and in 1975 she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Eastern Michigan University. She met her first husband, Donald Yates, while working at MotorWheel but for the majority of Sue’s career she worked as a banker. Starting at Ypsilanti Savings Bank (later known as Society Bank) but later she spent a number of years with People Driven Credit Union. She enjoyed the interactions with coworkers and loved spending time with the patrons of the credit union. Going above and beyond for her members, even helping her most favorite patrons balance their checkbooks or navigate life events. Sue also offered her banking and finance expertise for St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. She and Rick enjoyed spending time at the legion Local #268 in Milan as active members.

In 1981, Sue married her beloved Rick. She and Rick raised Kerstin, Jimmy and Jodie to be compassionate and giving people. Sue showed her children, family and friends how important service to a community is as she held various positions in her community including Treasurer of Augusta Township. Sue inspired many around her by volunteering and organizing with the Hope Clinic (serving food to the homeless) and constantly championed her beloved Compassion Ministry in Milan. She was also a member of the Assembly of God in Ypsilanti and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Pittsfield Twp.

Sue will always be remembered as a woman that loved fiercely. She was a woman of many talents, playing guitar, playing golf and making her famous “Grandma's cookies”. You knew you were special if you received your own tin of cookies at Christmas time. She loved the Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, and shared a special love for Eric Clapton with her husband. Her loved ones will always think of her when they enjoy a Mike’s Lemonade, Kahlua and Cream on the porch, and especially when they take the last Squirt from the fridge, as they most likely encountered her Scottish temper if they dared to have the last drop. She loved the comforts in life like taking cruises, relaxing on a beach, and taking naps. Sue was never without a turtleneck or a pair of comfy socks. Her impact and wit will never be forgotten by the many friends she regularly spent time with, including the Ferndale Girls of ‘66.

Sue is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Rick Wilson; her loving children, Kerstin (Corey, her favorite son in law) Rider, Jimmy Wilson, and Jodie (Steve) Beavers; her cherished grandchildren, Kyle, Kaden, Brady, Connor, Janae, and Justin; and great-grandchildren. Sue is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Michelle, Sarah, Aaron, Sam, Karen, Kimmy, and Darryl. She will be remembered fondly by sisters-in-law, Sandy (Steve) Ledbetter and Bonnie (Larry) Leonard, and brother-in-law Ron (Cheryl) Wilson. Forever loved by her best friend of 44 years, Sue Cramer; cousin, Donna Milhof; and special friends, Linda Pasquale, Mary Fisher, and Debbie Mack. She also is survived by her precious, four-legged furry companions, Recon and Biscuit.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Mina; brother, David Given; grandmother Mary Given; adored in-laws, Jim and JoAnne Wilson; best friend, Judy, and her fur-babies, Willie, Inky, Travis and Sam.

Visitation will be held at Nie Funeral Home on Carpenter Road on Monday, October 25, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
