Tom was born on September 5, 1941 to Stephen and Stephanie Schumacher in Detroit, Michigan. He attended the Lenox Center for years in Detroit with other disabled young adults. After his parents passed away, his care fell under the responsibility of his sister, Dorothy Thompson. He moved to the Lansing area and worked for several businesses, including Peckham Inc., a nonprofit vocational rehab organization. Tom also lived in Ann Arbor for several years and worked for Chi-Chi’s restaurant and Kroger’s. Once he “retired,” he attended an adult day services program called The Oaks.
In 2012, Tom moved to St. Louis Center outside of Chelsea, Michigan where he resided for the last six years. He enjoyed the activities, shared meals, programs, attending mass, and delivering Meals on Wheels with the other residents.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Stephanie Schumacher and his loving brother-in-law, John Thompson.
He is survived by his loving sister, Dorothy (Schumacher) Thompson; two nieces, Jean (Mark) Dault and Joyce (Russ) Johnson; and one nephew, Stephen (April) Thompson. He is also survived by his four grandnephews, Paul & Luke Johnson and Dale & Jack Thompson. Cousins include Jo Kleer, Tony & Allison Dombrowski, and Patricia & Jim Zabawski.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at 4:30 pm at the Chapel at St. Louis Center, 16195 West Old US Highway 12, Chelsea, Michigan 48118.
