Obituary

Obituary for Betty Ruth Gudmundson (Redman)

Betty Ruth (nee Redman) Gudmundson was born July 7, 1927, in Hammond, Indiana, and entered her eternal rest on December 18, 2019, at home at the Sanctuary at St. Joseph Village, Ypsilanti, Michigan.

While attending high school she worked part-time at the Manhattan Shirt factory, sewing pockets on men’s shirts. She attended St. Francis Xavier College in Chicago, earned her BSN in 1949 and worked for 20 years as an orthopedic nurse at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond.

Singing in the church choir, she met Harry Gudmundson, the choir director, who became the love of her life. They were married August 10, 1958, in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hammond. When Harry came to Ann Arbor to work on his PhD, she began her 30-year career in orthopedic nursing at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

Betty’s interests included crocheting, jazz music and the Chicago Cubs. She & Harry were faithful members of Darlington Lutheran Church. She was loved by her new neighbors and the staff at the Sanctuary at St. Joe, where she was blessed to spend the last two years of her life.

She is survived by her brother-in-law Arvid Gudmundson and his wife Maxine of Texas.

Visitation will be Friday, January 3, 2020, at 10:00 am followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am at Darlington Lutheran Church, 3545 Packard, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Darlington Lutheran Church.
